This book does an excellent job of explaining how the modern western lifestyle and diet is leading to chronic illness. It then offers solutions for the common pitfalls of diet and exercise. Technically this is a Paleo Lifestyle book, but I appreciate how well it explains everything instead of just asking you to blindly trust its advice.

Please give it a read and you will likely never want to return to your unhealthy lifestyle.

The Great Cholesterol Myth- a book everyone should read!

I recently read an excellent book entitled ‘The Great Cholesterol Myth: Why lowering your cholesterol won’t prevent heart disease- and the statin free plan that will. It was wrtitten by Johnny Bowden, PH.D and Stephen Sinatra M.D.

This book explains where the erroneous origin of the idea that cholesterol is bad for our heath came from and how important cholesterol is to our health and that high cholesterol (of the good type) is actually an indicator of health and longevity.

Rather that rehash the book I will simply state that you must read this book as it will change your perception on diet and cholesterol. I know it did mine!

Additionally, if you are currently taking a cholesterol reducing medication (aka a statin) this book will shock you when you find out the truth about statin drugs and that there are really only a few rare exceptions where a statin is a good idea.

The book also goes into detail on dietary suggestions and supplements that will help increase your ‘good’ cholesterol and lower your ‘bad’ cholesterol. The book also suggests blood tests you should be asking your doctor to order so that you can have a complete picture of your risk factors for heart disease.

The book is available all over and I do know there is a Kindle version as well.

What’s wrong with wheat or why I am now gluten free.

I recently read a very interesting book about Wheat and Gluten and the profound effect it is having on our health.

The book is ‘Wheat Belly’ by Dr. William Davis, MD.

You need to read this book. Especially if you have trouble with your health.

The book discusses the history of our modern wheat (started out as einkorn) and why Genetic Modification has made wheat almost impossible to be tolerated by anyone. The doctor goes into much detail and includes case studies and dietary advice on how to successfully eliminate modern GMO wheat from your diet.

Rather than write a review of his book I simply suggest you get a copy of this book and read it right away. Especially if you have issues such as visceral fat (aka love handles), diabetes, hypoglycemia, inflammation, arthritis, heart disease, cloudy thinking (especially after eating wheat), joint pain, asthma, diarrhea, IBS, addiction to carbohydrates, ADHD, ADD, addictions in general, liver disease, skin rashes, and many more.

I was so shocked by the information in this book that I decided to personally go wheat-free (gluten free) immediately. This was almost 6 months ago and I can report that leaving modern wheat was one of the best choices I have made for my health in a long time. Interesting to note that I test negative for Celiac disease.

I now routinely counsel patients to try going wheat free for a month and see for themselves. I am also surprised by how many report positive changes in their health.

Read the book and decide for yourself. Or just simply try a week or a month living wheat free and find out how you respond. You might be surprised. I know I was.

Back Pain
The National Institute of Health states that back pain can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden sharp pain that makes movement difficult. It can start suddenly or get worse slowly over time.

Back pain is becoming epidemic. According to researchers, there is an 80% chance that you will suffer from back pain at some point in your life. Researches also note that on any given day about 10% of the US population is completely incapacitated by back pain.

Anyone can suffer from back pain and back pain has endless causes. The most common causes are aging, obesity, poor physical fitness, sports and exercise injuries, stress, poor posture, certain diseases (including arthritis), herniated discs, auto accidents, smoking, and heavy lifting.

Back pain, whether acute or chronic can affect career choices, daily routines and leisure time activities. Prescription medications as with the other types of pain may provide temporary relief. However, chronic back pain may not respond well to medications and other alternative therapies may provide the best option for resolution. In the case of back pain, again it is important to have a proper evaluation with your MD to rule out any serious medical conditions.

It is important to note that current research has found that in many cases back pain is simply not related to any sort of structural abnormality. Recent studies using MRIs in perfectly healthy patients with no back pain found that about 40% of these people had serious abnormalities including damaged discs. Other researchers have confirmed this finding. It seems that in a person with back pain where imaging studies discover a disc bulge or protrusion that the disc abnormalities are often simply coincidental. Current clinical guidelines for MDs now suggest that they not routinely order imaging or other diagnostic tests when patients have non-specific low back pain.

New Year: New You- Let Acupuncture support your New Year’s Resolutions.

Now that the New Year has arrived, many people consider changes in their lives, otherwise known as New Year’s resolutions.

However well-intended, historically, these resolutions don’t work: research shows statistically 80-90% fail within 4 months.  They fail because people ask themselves to overcome negative habits based solely on a calendar change. If a resolution doesn’t have a strong personal commitment, backed by an effective support system, it is likely to fail.

The use of Acupuncture can provide the necessary support system to insure a successful outcome with any personal improvement including New Year’s Resolutions.

Which of the following scenarios pertain to you?
Reduce/stop alcohol consumption
Many people turn to alcohol to avoid dealing with negative aspects of their life.  Some examples could be loss of a loved one, guilt issues, difficulty with relationships or conflict with a family member. Once the decision is made to reduce or to stop alcohol consumption, it can be a daunting task to complete alone. What is Classical Five Element Acupuncture?

As a practitioner of Classical Five Element Acupuncture, I wanted to explain this system of medicine.

Classical Five Element Acupuncture , which is an ancient wisdom adapted by Professor J.R. Worsley for our modern world. It is a highly effective and unique system of medicine that diagnoses and treats the root cause of disease.

History of Classical Five Element Acupuncture
CFEA is an oral tradition and is passed down from masters to students. It is not taught in modern TCM schools and was originally part of the training given to students of Chinese Medicine from their masters before the Cultural Revolution in China.
Learning and practicing this medicine requires a commitment to a lifetime of studying and a willingness to really reach out and connect with patients on all three levels of body, mind and spirit.
For thousands of years, the Chinese have recognized that the Five Elements: Fire, Earth, Metal, Water & Wood exist in everything including the human body. CFEA asserts that every human being is born with, or develops early in life, an imbalance in the natural functioning of these Five Elements. This imbalance becomes the underlying cause of illness and is where the patient’s treatment is focused.
This imbalance that becomes the underlying cause of illness is labeled the Causative Factor (CF). Accurate diagnosis and treatment of the CF is the key to Classical Five-Element Acupuncture. When the CF is accurately diagnosed and treated, the root cause of disease resolves and the symptoms signaling the imbalance disappear.
How Classical Five Element Acupuncture differs from other systems
There is a very important distinction between other Acupuncture systems and Classical Five Element Acupuncture. Classical Five Element Acupuncture is a unique and highly effective system of medicine because it diagnoses the root cause of disease and treats the body, mind and patient’s spirit connection directly. The acupuncture points CFEA utilizes not only have powerful physical healing abilities, but also powerful Mind and Spirit healing abilities.

Realizing that the leg pain was a physical manifestation of his depression and frustration, I treated him at all three levels- body mind & spirit, while never directly treating the leg pain. After 6 weekly treatments, his leg pain completely vanished (in fact, he had actually forgotten about the pain).
By treating each patient’s root imbalance, on an individual basis, as nature intended, Classical Five Element Acupuncture Practitioners typically obtain deeper, longer lasting and more effective results in a shorter number of treatments regardless of which symptoms or ‘disease’ their patients present with.

Lifestyle tips to slow the aging process

I have compiled a short list of easy steps you can take to slow the aging process and bring a higher level of health to your body based on the information I have learned over the years of practicing/studying medicine:
1. Receive 6-8 hours of sleep every night- the body needs sufficient time to repair and recover every night. If you watch TV, stop watching at least 2 hours before you want to go to sleep.
2. Practice proper dental hygiene- brush and floss at least every morning and every night and be sure to get regular checkups at your dentist. Study after study has shown this to have a direct impact on heart health as well.
3. Mediate every day- do this for at least 10 minutes at the end of the day to give the mind a chance to slow down and rest. Ideally, 30 minutes, or more, a day would be a great goal to work towards and just before bed time would be a great time to do this. Pay attention those of you with insomnia due to an over active mind- This will help you!
4. Exercise everyday- plan to get at least 35 minutes of cardiovascular activity. A great option is to simply walk for 35 minutes after work (ask your partner and or family to join you to make it fun and a great way to bond/socialize). It will rejuvenate your body/mind after a long and stressful day at the office. Please be sure to check with your physician before you start any new exercise regimen.
5. Drink water all day every day- In TBM we recommend one quart of water per every 50 pounds of body weight per day (rounded up). It seems like a lot at first, but once you start hydrating your body properly you will begin to have more energy, skin will clear up and as a bonus flush out toxins. If you drink coffee this is very important as coffee is a very powerful diuretic and will massively dehydrate you.
6. If you are over 40 take two baby aspirin daily (81mg x 2)- studies show this reduces the risk of heart attacks and stroke and new studies are indicating it will decrease the risk of some cancers. Be careful as aspirin can upset some people stomachs. Be sure to get your physicians approval first.
7. Drink green tea- more and more studies are showing great benefits from the antioxidant levels as well as protection from Alzheimer’s disease. One caveat is with the Alzheimer’s, the tea needs to be caffeinated.
8. Get some sun daily (at least 20 minutes)-  the sun provides our vitamin D. Studies show that vitamin D helps promote a state of general happiness and new studies are starting to reveal that it may ward of certain cancers. Additionally, it has been shown to slow the aging process of arteries and it is well known to help the body manage calcium. If you can’t get the sun you need supplement with vitamin D3. Be sure to get your physicians approval first.
9. Get omega-3 fatty acids with DHA in your diet- this can be found in many fishes including salmon. There are many fish supplements as well and for those of you who do not like fish or are vegetarian/vegan there are also plant based supplements as well. This is for the heart eyes and liver. Be sure to get your physicians approval first.
10. Remove white sugar from your diet- in reality, white sugar is a poison to the body and you would be surprised how much white sugar is added to the processed foods we eat. I have no idea when the American diet became so ‘sweet’.  In TBM, malfunctioning sugar metabolism is the main cause of disease in the human body. Don’t forget that sugar includes high fructose corn syrup. Read the label of any prepackaged foods you buy and whenever possible switch them for healthful choices that contain no added sugar or just make the items from scratch using fresh produce.
11. Pay attention to your basic health statistics- be sure to keep your blood pressure close to 115/75 (or lower), get your HDL and LDL below 100 and your c-reactive protein to less than 1 (this is the stress/inflammation indicator). If you are unaware of these numbers see your physician for a checkup. As always, please be sure to check with your physician to make sure these numbers are good for you.
*I highly recommend that you muscle test any supplement before you begin to take it. Simply ask the body if the supplement is in your highest and best and at what dosage. If you do not know how to muscle test you can search the web to learn how.
